Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the right to challenge certain calls from the official, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
